Request for Applicants to Serve on Medical Marijuana Commission

            Chapter 403 of the 2013 session of the Maryland General Assembly establishes an independent Medical Marijuana Commission within the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  The Commission is tasked with developing a request for proposals from academic medical centers to establish medical marijuana programs, approving applications, and monitoring and overseeing the programs that are established.

 

            The Commission is comprised of 11 members, appointed by the Governor.  In addition to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene or his designee, the following members are required to be appointed:

 

(I)                One member of the public who supports the use of marijuana for medical purposes and who is or was a patient who found relief from the use of medical marijuana;

(II)             One member of the public designated by the Maryland Chapter of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence;

(III)          Three physicians licensed in the state who specializes in addiction, pain, oncology, neurology, or clinical research;

(IV)          One nurse licensed in the state who has experience in hospice care, nominated by a state research institution or trade association;

(V)             One pharmacist licensed in the state nominated by a state research institution or trade association;

(VI)          One scientist who has experience in the science of marijuana nominated by a state research institution;

(VII)       One representative of the Maryland State’s Attorneys’ Association

(VIII)    One representative of the Maryland Chiefs of Police

(IX)          An attorney who is knowledgeable about medical marijuana laws in the United States

 

The Department is seeking applications from the public through June 30, 2013 from interested individuals to serve on the Commission in the (I), (III), and (IX) categories.  You may access the applications at:
