The DHMH Vital Statistics Administration (VSA) maintains a registry of unintentional drug and alcohol related deaths from data made available by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and VSA. VSA prepares a series of reports containing detailed information on overdose deaths that have occurred in the State. The annual report, released in the summer of the following year, examines fatal overdose trends in the State by: age at time of death, race and ethnicity, gender, place of death, and substances related to death.
In 2014, VSA updated the methodology used to identify overdose deaths. Since the updated methodology will be used in future reports, the data contained in the 2013 Annual Report should serve as a baseline for comparison with future data.
