Integrated System of Laboratory Data Summaries at the Maryland
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Laboratories
Administration, Division of Virology and Immunology
The system was developed as a resource tool at the state level, accessible to local
public health professionals.
Laboratory data from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Laboratories Administration, Division of Virology and Immunology are summarized and
updated weekly.
The data presented here include non-influenza respiratory viral pathogens (Respiratory
Syncytial Virus, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza Virus types I-III, Rhinovirus) during the
influenza season. These data include the numbers of tests performed by cell culture,
the non-influenza respiratory viral pathogens identified and their distributions within the
five regions of Maryland (Western, Capital, Central, Southern, Eastern Shore) as well as
the Maryland Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) and out of state cases, if any.
All OCME cases do not include regional data. In some cases, specimens were
forwarded to the CDC for further testing.
The seasonality of influenza in the Northern Hemisphere generally occurs between
October and May. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official
start date of the 2011-2012 Influenza Season is February 24, 2012
