1. How long does an autopsy take and will it effect  funeral arrangements?

An autopsy usually takes 2-4 hours and should not effect the family's plans for a viewing or the funeral arrangements.  The Medical Examiner's Office and funeral directors work closely to accommodate families' needs.

2. What is a pending case?   

Cases are pended so that the family can proceed with funeral arrangements before a cause of death has been established.

When the cause of death is not immediately determined at autopsy, the case is considered "pending."   Cases are often pended when additional medical reports are necessary to establish the cause of death.   As soon as the medical examiner can make a diagnosis, the case is unpended.  The OCME sends a letter to vital records stating the cause and manner of death.  The funeral home is then notified so that they can obtain the death certificate for the family.

3. How may I obtain a copy of an autopsy report?

    
   Send your request, the name of the decedent, your relationship to the decedent, the decedent’s date of death, and where you would like to receive the report to:

$30 for a first degree relative

$120 for all others (includes toxicology report).

 

Requests for other information or material shall be accompanied by a court order or subpoena unless the Custodian of Records determines compelling circumstances exist warranting the release of materials. If releasable, the contents of the file will be copied at a cost.
